The South African word Ubuntu translates to “unity through diversity.” In Lalela’s Rainbow Nation curriculum, students explored their heritage while learning about the different cultures of their classmates. They shared their traditions, rituals, beliefs, and cultural practices, then drew a person in clothing and accessories representing their culture. The artists then cut their drawings into sections and exchanged them to construct a new person made up of a mixture of cultures. This process helped the artists recognize that despite belonging to different cultures, we are all part of the same human race.
