DATHONGA DESIGNS

“Weaving hands of women in rural Mozambican communities.”

Made from natural, raw materials, such as grass fibre, seeds, bone, amber, and wood, Dathonga Designs’ delicate basket bags, bracelets and hats all have a story to tell. The brand was founded by Marcia Nancy in 2003 and every object Dathonga Design’s artisans produce in the southern Mozambican city of Inhambane is created by intertwining African traditional artisan knowledge with modern design. Each piece is made by hand by local women, using the traditional Sipatsi technique that combines basketwork and geometry symbols from the Tonga culture to brilliant effect.
